Children recognize that volume can vary and they can intentionally change volume. They can distinguish differences in loud and quiet that they create or notice.
Examples: Child responds to heavy vibration of a drum and signs “loud” to show they know it is making sound. Child shows surprise when cotton ball in a container makes no sound; smiles and repeats action. When shaking a container with beads inside, says the bead shaker is louder than the cotton ball shaker. When asked how to make the noise his wooden instrument was making softer, child wrapped it in a cloth.
