Levels of Thinking

Resources are categorized by whether they target foundational levels of thinking or levels of thinking that extend past foundational levels (expanding).

Suggested AdaptationS

Check out our guide to adaptations. Adapt for environment, materials, instruction.

General Guide to Adaptations

Description

Children will learn about what you can do with blocks (hold, drop, mouth, bang, stack vertically or horizontally) and add variety to their own activities.

Interactive Lesson

Environment

Place blocks/materials within child’s reach on low/open shelves or in clear open bins.

Materials

  • Use blocks/objects with a variety of high contrast colors, shapes, and textures to allow children to accurately perceive differences.
  • Also consider the reverse – some children may need blocks with limited contrast to keep them from getting distracted.

Instruction

Use individualized instructional strategies such as prompting, modeling, reinforcement, wait time, and scaffolding to facilitate child engagement in the activity.
