Children can intentionally change pitch (low or high) and tempo (fast or slow) and can distinguish differences in pitch and tempo that they create or notice.
Examples: Child changes tempo of singing and tapping to match a beat. Child produces a high note when asked by hitting notes at the top of a xylophone. As the tempo of a song increases, tempo of child’s dancing increases. Child describes music in levels – a whisper is soft or quiet; shouting is loud; inside voice is medium.
