Children explicitly identify and distinguish variations in light, shadow, and transparency. They know that shadows are created when objects block light and understand that some objects alter light while others do not. They also realize that shadows change when the object or light source moves.
Examples:
Child says “It blocks the light” when using a flashlight on a solid objects and says “It doesn’t block” when shining light on a transparent object.
When asked, “Can we get out of the sun? It’s hot.” Child goes to a shady area.
Child makes a shadow, but can’t “fix” it when other objects block the light or the angle of the light toward the object doesn’t align with a surface to create a shadow.
Child says “Now it’s green!” when a transparent green shape is held to the light.
Child makes the shape of the duck puppet made by someone’s hand change by moving the light or the hand closer and further from the wall.
