Investigation – Computational Thinking: Using Blocks as Symbols and Codes
Description
Children will learn basic concepts of computational thinking by using blocks as symbols or codes for movements such as clapping.
Interactive Lesson
Environment
Provide a Lego® board or inset frame for shape blocks to stabilize the blocks and sequence. This ensures their sequence will stay in order and not be knocked out of order
Materials
While blocks are great to use and often available, any items can be used to meet the skill and interest set of the students (e.g. cars in different colors, balls)
Instruction
- Simplify and use one color. Children can still assign a movement to red bricks, for example. For each red brick lined up, students will clap one time.
- Children working on gross motor development can jump, stomp or twirl whereas those working on fine motor can try to clap, snap or pound.
