Check out our guide to adaptations. Adapt for environment, materials, instruction.

General Guide to Adaptations

Description

With your child. explore blocks by modeling picking up a block/object and feeling it while talking out loud about its characteristics; stacking a few of them; lining them up horizontally, or placing them in a pile.

Interactive Lesson

Environment

Adapt the placement and size of the blocks you provide. For example, if they prefer their right side, place large, visually interesting block to their left side if they need to practice rolling to their left.

Materials

Consider using blocks/objects that squeak, rattle, crinkle, or otherwise have a sound. For example, for children with low vision, this may encourage interaction and engagement with the materials.

Instruction

Increase or decrease sentence complexity: Use longer or shorter sentences to describe the child’s actions depending on their developmental level. (E.g. “I see you have a blue block/object in your hand!” or “a blue block/object!”)
