General Guide to Adaptations

Description

Did you know making donuts is all about STEM learning? Children engage in computational thinking concepts, like following a sequence of steps in a particular order, and chemistry and mathematical concepts, like measuring and mixing ingredients.  Suggestions for possible adaptations are built into this activity.

Environment

  • Place materials within reach in a contained space for easier access
  • Provide a step-stool or comfortable seated space for child to work

Materials

  • Put ingredients in bowls/containers for easier scooping
  • Place an anti-slip mat below the plates/ bowls so they do not move
  • Use long/bigger handled utensils for easier grasping

Instruction

  • Use visual cues to guide the activity
  • Provide hand-over-hand or hand-under hand to explore foods better
  • Narrate/sign your child’s actions as they experiment with the foods
