Description

Toddlers start noticing and responding to the similarities and differences in their environments. Let’s create a learning environment to cultivate their STEM learning during mealtime.

Adaptations

Here are specialized adaptations for this resource.

Environment

To help position your child for feeding, use pillows, stacking boxes, or reams of paper to support their feet

Materials

  • Use handled sippy cup for easy grasping
  • Place an anti-slip mat below the plates/ bowls so they do not move
  • Use long/bigger handled utensils for easier grasping
  • Use a deep plate or a plate with a raised edge to support scooping

Instruction

  • Model tasting and trying the foods your child is having. Use gestures/signs and your voice to draw their attention to the properties of the food
  • Use pictures and/or icons to signal next steps and/or each step of the sequence
  • Narrate/sign your child’s actions as they experiment with the foods
