Description

Do you know mealtimes are a great opportunity to support children’s STEM learning?  Introduce STEM words, encourage your babies to explore and help them make a connection between words and real-life experiences. Describe the tastes and textures (sweet, soft, smooth, mush) while feeding your baby!

Adaptations

Here are specialized adaptations for this resource.

Environment

  • To help position your child for feeding, use pillows, stacking boxes, or reams of paper to support their feet
  • For children with low muscle tone, use a pillow or rolled up tower to support their trunk and body

Materials

  • Use handled sippy cup for easy grasping
  • Place an anti-slip mat below the plates/ bowls so they do not move
  • Use long/bigger handled utensils for easier grasping

Instruction

  • Provide hand-over-hand support to help your child explore foods better
  • Narrate/sign your child’s actions as they experiment with the foods
